toward balance · terms of service
The plain terms.
Effective 23 October 2026
- Your content is yours. You own what you put in Balance; we only hold it to show it back to you, on your devices.
- Free for individuals. If that ever changes, we'll tell you first, and anything you've logged stays yours to export.
- Be decent to the service and to us. Don't break it, overload it, or use it for anything unlawful.
- No promises we can't keep. We work hard to keep Balance up and accurate, but it is a small, independent service provided as-is.
Who we are, and what this is
Toward Balance ("Balance", "we") is a personal-balance app for iOS and the
web, available at towardbalance.app,
built and operated by Cameron Dunn in Australia. These terms are the
agreement between you and us for using the Balance apps, website, API and
command-line tool (together, "the service"). By creating an account or
using the service you agree to them. Our
Privacy Policy explains how we handle your data and
forms part of these terms.
Your account
- You need to be at least 13 years old to use Balance. If you are under
the age at which you can agree to terms like these where you live, a
parent or guardian needs to agree for you.
- Sign-in is handled by Clerk. Keep your
sign-in email secure and don't share your session or API keys; anything
done through your account is treated as done by you. Tell us straight
away if you think someone else has access.
- One person per account. You may use the service on as many of your own
devices as you like.
Your content
Everything you create in Balance — your areas, activities, the occurrences
you log, and your settings — is yours. You give us only the permission we
need to run the service: to store your content, sync it between your
devices, back it up, and show it back to you. We don't claim ownership, we
don't use it to train anything, and we don't share it with anyone except
the infrastructure providers listed in the Privacy Policy, who process it
only on our behalf.
You are responsible for what you put in the service. Keep it to things you
have the right to record, and don't store anything unlawful.
You can take your content with you at any time: Profile →
Download my data exports everything as JSON. Deleting an item
keeps it recoverable for 30 days, after which it is permanently removed;
deleting your account removes everything immediately.
What we ask of you
Please don't:
- interfere with the service or try to get around its security, rate limits, or access controls;
- access it by automated means other than through your own account's API or command-line tool, at a reasonable rate;
- probe, scan, or test it for vulnerabilities without asking us first (we're happy to hear from researchers — email us);
- use it to harass anyone, to break the law, or to infringe someone else's rights;
- resell it, or pass it off as your own.
The service
Free for individuals
Balance is free for personal use today. If we ever introduce paid plans or
limits, we'll announce it in the app and on this page in advance, and your
existing content will remain yours to export regardless.
Pre-release builds
TestFlight and other pre-release builds are works in progress. They may
have bugs, change without notice, or be withdrawn. Apple's TestFlight terms
also apply to them.
Availability and changes
We aim to keep the service available and your data intact, and we publish
a live status
page. But this is a small, independent service: there will be
maintenance, outages, and bugs. We may add, change, or remove features
over time. If we ever decide to shut Balance down, we'll give you at least
30 days' notice and a way to export your data first.
Not medical advice
Balance helps you notice where your attention goes. It is not a medical,
psychological, or professional service, and nothing in it is advice about
your health. If you're struggling, please talk to a professional.
Ending things
You can stop using Balance at any time, and delete your account from the
Profile page — that deletion is immediate and permanent. We may suspend or
close an account that breaks these terms, or that we're required to close
by law; where it's practical we'll tell you first and give you a chance to
export your data. The sections on content, disclaimers, and liability
continue to apply after an account is closed.
Disclaimers and liability
The service is provided "as is" and "as available". To the extent the law
allows, we make no warranties about it — including that it will be
uninterrupted, error-free, or suit a particular purpose — and we are not
liable for indirect or consequential loss, or for loss of data beyond what
we can reasonably recover from our backups. Where we are found liable, our
total liability for everything arising out of the service is limited to
the greater of what you paid us in the previous twelve months and
AUD 50.
Nothing in these terms excludes rights you have under law that cannot be
excluded — including the consumer guarantees under the Australian Consumer
Law and equivalent protections where you live. Where such a guarantee
applies, our liability is limited, where the law permits, to supplying the
service again.
Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of Australia, and disputes are to be
handled in Australian courts — unless the consumer-protection law where you
live gives you the right to something else. We'd much rather sort things
out by email first.
Changes to these terms
If these terms change, we'll update this page and its effective date. For
material changes we'll say so in the app before they take effect. Continuing
to use the service after that means you accept the updated terms; if you
don't, export your data and delete your account.
